Laboratory Project Manager

Summary Description: The Laboratory Project Manager is the lead contact for assigned projects with the client(s). Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that project deliverables are achieved. Communicate progress on the project as required. Have technical competence to actively manage sample intake, processing and storage and develop processes when required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high level of customer service and responsiveness to assigned clients.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of project.
  • Work with the client to drive project workflows and facilitate the definition of project scope, goals and deliverables.
  • Define project tasks and resource requirements.
  • Develop full scale project plans.
  • Assemble and coordinate project staff.
  • Manage project budget.
  • Manage project resource allocation.
  • Plan and schedule project timelines.
  • Track project deliverables using appropriate tools.
  • Provide direction and support to project team.
  • Quality assurance: Investigate and remediate identified areas of nonconformance.

Research Associate – PBMC Processing

Summary Description: This individual is a Research Associate who will work with a team of research associates and scientist at AKESOgen. The Research Associate will work under the general direction of a Team Lead. This individual will perform PBMC processing, nucleic acid extractions on a variety of sample types, equipment maintenance, solution and reagent preparation in addition to other tasks in laboratory. All duties are subject to change by managers during employment. The following is an outline and is not intended to be inclusive of all tasks that could be requested of employee.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in assembling sample collection kits and inventory management.
  • Collect samples from client site per schedule.
  • Accession samples with accuracy and process PBMC samples, aliquot and store them per protocol.
  • Ensure on-going data integrity for the project by overseeing data collection, data management, quality control and reporting of results.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized lab.
  • A team player helping to construct, implement, and manage multiple experiments.
  • Operate automated liquid handling platforms for sample processing, DNA/RNA extraction and quantification instruments.
  • Assist the team leads and scientists in related function.
  • Assist in tracking, stocking and restocking inventory.
  • Complete projects under guidance of senior lab personnel.
  • Understand and follow OSHA, CLIA and CAP guidelines.
  • Maintain instrumentation and the appropriate documentation for each instrument.
  • Demonstrate a high level of ethics in all aspects of professional practice.

Systems Administrator / Data Analyst / Bioinformatics

The company is now expanding by adding a dedicated full time systems administrator, data analyst, and bioinformatics support staff to support the additional ongoing projects.

We are ideally looking for a talented, charismatic, and entrepreneurial individual that likes wearing many roles in a fast pace and challenging work environment.

The candidate should be able to juggle many competing priorities with minimal supervision. He/she should be dynamic and willing to handle inside/outside customer facing situations and champion projects as the needs arise. This position will be initially reporting to the VP of Operations. It is expected that this position will eventually provide direction for IT/Bioinformatics policy within the company.

We have compiled a list of expected roles/ initial assignments the candidate will need to be comfortable managing initially.

Systems Administration
- Manage/Install/Configure/Improve Akesogen’s internal Network, from Firewall/router, server management, NAS, and personal/instrument computers.
- Implement/Manage daily data backups (Instrument data and individual computer backup)
- Data Storage/NAS configuration and transfers for long term storage.
- Act as LIMS administrator
- Network Security and FIPS compliance for Government, HIPAA compliance for CLIA data.
- Design/Configure/Install/Migrate email systems into an Akesogen managed solution.
- Design/Configure/Install/Manage Secure FTP server
- Coordinate with management for LIMS system discovery, onboarding, development and/or implementation.
- Clean, organize, and optimize the building’s IT related infrastructure to a professional standard.
- Manage/oversee Quality management system roles as related to System Administrator’s duties.
- Produce weekly summary reports for management review.

Data Analysis
- Run daily/weekly genotyping analysis using Affy Power tools (APT) or Genotyping console on ~5000 samples. Create reports and manage data transfer for delivery to clients.
- Create methods for auditing sample fate and tracking checkpoint data.
- Possibly generate clinical reports based on genotyping results, and create a more efficient/compliant data delivery method to Cyto-Geneticist.
- Provide data analysis for misc. research services, as required.

Education/Prior Experience Requirements:
 We are flexible on the details, but would typically expect the equivalent of an advance degree or years of direct hands on working experience. 
Must be fluent in both windows and linux operating environments and scripting.
 Ideally knows or willing to learn R, NGS freeware tools, SQL (LIMS software), network security and related skillsets to roles listed above. 
Expected to have worked under minimal supervision previously and able to demonstrate skill sets with previous work experience examples. 
Must have references willing to discuss technical skill sets.

Job Title: Histotechnician

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
    • Routine histology
    • Special stains
    • Immunohistochemistry
    • Cytogenetics (FISH)
  • Prepare microscopic slides of human tissue for research/diagnostic purposes; includes fixation, dehydration, infiltration, embedding, microtomy, and mounting to include both paraffin processed tissue and frozen sectioning.
  • Specimen accessioning to include all manual and computerized data entry and ensure quality control procedures are implemented throughout the sample workflow.
  • Prepare and maintain all necessary reagents, including stains, alcohols, and paraffins according to proper specifications.
  • Enforce proper chemical and biological hygiene practices to ensure a safe and compliant working environment.
  • Perform chemical waste disposal according to laboratory policy in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain instrumentation and the appropriate documentation for each instrument and assay in the department, including regular maintenance.
  • Demonstrate a high level of ethics in all aspects of professional practice.
  • Document and maintain records systematically such that they can be easily obtained when needed.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the information before filing and reporting.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized lab.
  • Comply with quality control policy and procedures to ensure all aspects of the laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws.
  • Understand and follow OSHA, CLIA and CAP guidelines.
  • Experience with assay validation and related reporting and SOP development.
  • Experience with the following platforms – Ventana Benchmark, Dako Autostainer, Leica Bond, and Aperio Scan Scope – preferred.
  • Experience with Clinical Trials a plus.

Required Skills and Education:

  • BS degree in biological sciences with at least three years’ experience in a pathology laboratory or AS degree with relevant experience. It is in the hiring manager’s discretion if a candidate has relevant experience or skills to enable him/her to fill this role.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) required
  • Excellent analytical abilities and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Excellent practical knowledge about the applications of scientific principles.
